International Women’s Day Breakfast success in Mt Gambier and Bordertown

Women in Business & Regional Development were thrilled to host the International Women’s Day breakfast at the Main Corner in Mount Gambier and Civic Centre in Bordertown with a live stream from the Adelaide IWD event on Friday the 6th of March. With over 110 guests attending the local events.

The Adelaide breakfast is the largest event celebrating International Women’s Day in Australia and it is the largest annual women’s event in the Adelaide calendar. This event was established in Adelaide in 1993 and has tremendous support from the Adelaide community attracting 2,500 guests in 2019 and raising $60,000, which was donated to UN Women Australia. 

We were thrilled to have Simone Kain, Hello Friday join us as host for the Mount Gambier event. WiBRD Board member Danielle England hosted our Bordertown event with Anne Champness, Tatiara District Council CEO welcoming everyone to the breakfast.

A panel of local business identities, in Bordertown, Lucy Dodd, Lowan Park Produce and (Liz) Elizabeth Ballinger, Teatrick Lavender Estate, reflected on their business stories and involvement with WiBRD.

In Mt Gambier, The Honourable Claire Scriven shared her journey in leadership, with some valuable advice to get a mentor and make use of your networks. 

Then we celebrated streaming to both sites the success of the 2020 Scholarships, with Cindy Cross from Post 

and Rail and IIana Adams from Lanamara they were involved in an entertaining interview by Di Ind, where we gained insight into how they utilised the knowledge they have gained from being the successful applicants of the Entrepreneurial scholarship and Business Builder Scholarship gaining valuable mentoring from Duncan Redman, Dare to Dream & Callena Rawlings from eNVIsion Limestone Coast, Flinders Uni.

Harriet Keatley then announced the opening of the applications for the 2021 Scholarships, with a new category, Women who lead in business, along with the Entrepreneurial scholarship and Business Builder Scholarship, further details on our website www.wibrd.org.au/scholarships2021 

WiBRD Board Member, Cathy Beckman, thank all our local businesses for supporting this day and providing a wonderful breakfast and atmosphere.  Cathy spoke about how WiBRD is providing a strong focus on our mission, to grow the potential of regional women and support them to create powerful legacies through building their leadership capacity and presenting a strong regional voice.

We then live streamed Natasha Stott-Despoja speech;  hosted by Penny Wong.  The theme Penny introduced was Women in Leadership and she spoke about the important role of supporting UN Women Australia, this year saw a new format due to COVID and it was streamed around SA and other parts of Australia. Natasha spoke about champion Women and our rights and how she is working in collaboration for fairer Australia for everyone.
